New York selects Princeton, Canadian national team forward Sarah Fillier with 1st pick in PWHL draft (2)

New York filled a necessary need on offense by selecting Princeton and Canadian national team forward Sarah Fillier with the first pick in the Professional Women’s Hockey League draft on Monday night.

Regarded by PWHL scouts as a “generational player,” Fillier is a three-time Patty Kazmaier college player of the year finalist. She graduated with a degree in psychiatry and completed her four-year career at Princeton ranking sixth on the school list with 93 goals and fourth with 193 points in 120 games.

Joey Chestnut, Takeru Kobayashi to compete in Netflix competition

  • By KAITLYN HUAMANI - Associated Press

After organizers for Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest said Joey Chestnut wouldn’t compete this year due to a deal with a rival brand, Netflix swiftly announced a new hot dog-eating competition that will feature Chestnut and his “fiercest rival.” Chestnut, a 16-time hot dog-eating champion, will face off with his frequent Nathan’s competitor, Takeru Kobayashi, in a live Netflix special on Sept. 2, the streamer announced Wednesday. The contest, titled “Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef,” will feature the two chowing down on all-beef hot dogs, likely in a nod to reports that Chestnut’s rival brand deal is with Impossible Foods, which makes vegan hot dogs.

Jerry West's impact on his home state of West Virginia runs deep

  • By TIM REYNOLDS - AP Basketball Writer

Jerry West left West Virginia decades ago. He never left his home state behind. For years, he quietly gave significant sums of money to his alma mater, West Virginia University. He always spoke with pride about where he came from, how the small-town roots shaped who he was even as he became a basketball icon. When asked to go home for various events, he tried to oblige. West died on Wednesday at age 86, a day that his alma mater called “the day everyone in West Virginia has always dreaded.”

High school biology teacher looks to make the most of his 'Tin Cup' moment at the US Open

  • By STEVE REED - AP Sports Writer

Colin Prater feels a little like Kevin Costner’s character in “Tin Cup” this week — a relative unknown who suddenly finds himself on one of golf’s biggest stages at the U.S. Open. So you can't blame him for being a little nervous. After all, his full-time job is a biology teacher and golf coach at Cheyenne Mountain High School in Colorado Springs. He punched his ticket to the U.S. Open by finishing second at a 36-hole qualifier in Bend, Oregon. He's had a chance to practice this week with former U.S. Open champions Wyndham Clark and Jordan Spieth, as well as Will Zalatoris and Sahith Theegala. And he's even gotten advice from Rory McIlroy. Now his goal is the make the cut.

Jerry West was the inspiration for the NBA logo, but he was conflicted about the honor

  • +3
  • By GREG BEACHAM - AP Sports Writer

Jerry West will be forever be referred to in basketball circles as “The Logo.” His silhouette is the basis for the NBA logo introduced in 1969, although the league never formally acknowledged it. West was one of the most exciting players of that era for the Los Angeles Lakers, and he was an ideal choice for the centerpiece of a logo created by brand consultant Alan Siegel. Siegel eventually acknowledged what everyone already knew, saying West was indeed the inspiration for the design of the logo silhouette. West was conflicted about the honor, saying he hated to draw attention to himself.

Edwin Díaz will return to closer role with Mets when he comes off injured list Thursday

  • By MIKE FITZPATRICK - AP Baseball Writer

Edwin Díaz will go right back into the closer role with the New York Mets when he returns from the injured list Thursday. The struggling reliever has been sidelined since May 29 with a right shoulder impingement. Before going on the IL, he blew three straight save chances and four out of five — and that didn’t even include a May 18 meltdown in Miami when he squandered a four-run lead in the ninth inning but wasn’t charged with a blown save. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza says Díaz has regained his confidence and feels good both physically and mentally, so the team is comfortable with him.

Saints saw their secondary as a strength even before Marshon Lattimore returned to practice

  • By BRETT MARTEL - AP Sports Writer

Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore's return to practice during minicamp is further bolstering a secondary that coaches already viewed as one of New Orleans' strengths. Injuries limited Lattimore to 17 games during the past two seasons combined and helped fuel trade speculation about the club's highest-paid defender. But Lattimore says he's not seeking a trade and intends to prove he's the “No. 1” cornerback in the NFL. New Orleans' defensive backfield also includes veteran safety Tyrann Mathieu and fourth-year cornerback Paulson Adebo. They tied for the team lead with four interceptions each last season. Versatile defensive back Alontae Taylor is entering his third season. And the Saints are eagerly awaiting the debut of 2024 second-round draft choice Kool-Aid McKinstry.

A women's pro soccer game was bumped for a music festival; Red Stars looking for a place to play it

  • By ANNE M. PETERSON - AP Soccer Writer

The Chicago Red Stars are looking for an alternative venue for their Sept. 21 home game against the San Diego Wave because of a just-announced music festival at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois. Organizers of Riot Fest announced that the festival was relocating from its longtime venue in Chicago’s Douglass Park to SeatGeek Stadium — conflicting with the previously scheduled National Women’s Soccer League match. Red Stars President Karen Leetzow decried the decision Wednesday on social media.

Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis misses on 3 pole vault world record attempts to conclude the Euros

  • By ANDREW DAMPF - AP Sports Writer

Armand Duplantis still has some work to do before extending his pole vault world record again. The American-born Swede missed three attempts at clearing 6.25 meters at the European Championships. But the Olympic and two-time world champion still claimed a third European title and extended his championship record to 6.10. And he has the Paris Olympics in less than 50 days to look forward to. Duplantis has set the world record eight times. The last came when he cleared 6.24 at the season-opening Diamond League meet in China in April. Marcell Jacobs and Olympic champion Italy won the 4x100 relay.

Cubs sign Jorge López to a minor league contract, giving the veteran reliever another chance

  • AP

The Chicago Cubs have signed Jorge López to a minor league contract, giving the veteran reliever another chance after an abrupt conclusion to his time with the New York Mets. The deal was listed on the team’s transactions page. The 31-year-old López threw his glove into the stands after he was ejected in the eighth inning of New York’s 10-3 loss to the Dodgers at Citi Field on May 29. López then used a profanity during a bizarre and confusing postgame interview in the Mets’ clubhouse. He was designated for assignment the following day, and he issued a statement apologizing to teammates, coaches, fans and the front office.
