FAQs

What is the fastest shape for the Pinewood Derby car? ›

To go fast, it's all about aerodynamics, and the best shape is a simple wedge. Just like a spoiler on the rear of a sports car, the wedge shape allows as much air to flow over the top of the car without hinderance while keeping the car pinned to the track.

Do heavier Pinewood Derby cars go faster? ›

Assuming all other factors are equal, a heavier car will be faster than a lighter car. The Pinewood Derby rules limit the weight of each car to 5 ounces.

How to finish Pinewood Derby car? ›

  1. Sand your car. ...
  2. Shake the paint bottle for one minute. ...
  3. Wait about 4 hours for the paint to completely dry then lightly sand your car until the paint is smooth.
  4. Apply another thin coat of paint. ...
  5. Apply additional coats of paint waiting at least one hour between coats.

What is the best design for a Pinewood Derby car? ›

The wedge is a classic and probably the easiest shape (besides keeping a block) to build your Pinewood Derby car. The Wedge is the foundation of many cool car designs, and it is designed to be aerodynamic and is a one-cut wonder.

Do fenders make Pinewood Derby cars faster? ›

Fenders can help efficiently direct the air around the wheels resulting in more speed. There are a few different types of fenders: Leading Edge Fenders: These fenders are placed in front of the wheels and help direct air over them, leading to a faster car.

Where is the best place to put weights on a Pinewood Derby car? ›

PUT MOST OF THE WEIGHT IN THE BACK

Science says the heaviest part of your car should be about 1 inch in front of the rear axle. The idea is that the farther back the weight is, the more potential energy you have because your center of mass is higher up on the track.

Should I sand the wheels on a pinewood derby car? ›

Don't forget your safety goggles! Starting with about 300 grit sandpaper sand the wheels. Work up to as fine of grit as you can find. Only sand enough to remove imperfections and make the wheel round as possible.

Does baking a pinewood derby car help? ›

Baking your Pinewood Derby wooden block helps to remove the moisture so that you have more wiggle room to add extra weight at the end. Remember, every little bit of weight in the right place makes a difference! Bake it in the oven at 250° for about 2 hours.

What does graphite do to a pinewood derby car? ›

Powdered graphite is an excellent lubricant to reduce friction on pinewood derby axles. Why do you want to reduce friction on your axles? It's simple physics; reduce friction to make your car faster. Stated another way, the fastest cars have the least friction.

Can you put Legos on a Pinewood Derby car? ›

Most pinewood derby rules limit the length of the car to 7" so don't add any LEGO pieces that extend past the front or back of the block. You can add LEGO pieces that make your car wider but the width should not exceed 2 3/4 inches. As a general rule, the height of your car should not be greater than 3 inches.

When should I paint my Pinewood Derby car? ›

Sandpaper and paint can turn a block of wood into a sleek Pinewood Derby racer that looks as smooth as steel. The trick is using the right materials and allowing plenty of time. Don't wait until the last minute! For best results, you'll need to start at least a week or two before the race.

What is the best tool to shape a Pinewood Derby car? ›

After you cut your car with a saw, use a Wood Rasp to smooth the cut and give your car more shape. Use a metal file to smooth out the grooves created by the rasp.

Does the shape of a Pinewood Derby car matter? ›

As a Pinewood Derby® car speeds down the track, it has to move the air it encounters out of the way. This pushing of the air creates drag and slows the car. Therefore, with all other things being equal, a car with the smallest area pushing against the air will be the fastest.

What is the most aerodynamic derby car shape? ›

Remember, a rectangular car is not an aerodynamic design. The most basic aerodynamic design is a simple wedge.

What is the top speed of Pinewood Derby? ›

How fast do these things go, anyway? The distribution plot below shows a range of speeds from 177 mph to 229 mph, with most cars exceeding 200 mph.
