Abraham’s Faith Confirmed(A)

22Now it came to pass after these things that (B)God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!”

And he said, “Here I am.”

2Then He said, “Take now your son, (C)your only son Isaac, whom you (D)love, and go (E)to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a (F)burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”

3So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off. 5And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; the [a]lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will (G)come back to you.”

6So Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and (H)laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together. 7But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!”

And he said, “Here I am, my son.”

Then he said, “Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the [b]lamb for a burnt offering?”

8And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the (I)lamb for a (J)burnt offering.” So the two of them went together.

9Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and (K)laid him on the altar, upon the wood. 10And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.

18who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, (A)“So shall your descendants be.” 19And not being weak in faith, (B)he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), (C)and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. 20He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, 21and being fully convinced that what He had promised (D)He was also able to perform.

Faithful Abraham(A)

8By faith (B)Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. 9By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, (C)dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, (D)the heirs with him of the same promise; 10for he waited for (E)the city which has foundations, (F)whose builder and maker is God.

11By faith (G)Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and (H)she[a] bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him (I)faithful who had promised. 12Therefore from one man, and him as good as (J)dead, were born as many as the (K)stars of the sky in multitude—innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore.

The Heavenly Hope

13These all died in faith, (L)not having received the (M)promises, but (N)having seen them afar off [b]were assured of them, embraced them and (O)confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14For those who say such things (P)declare plainly that they seek a homeland. 15And truly if they had called to mind (Q)that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed (R)to be called their God, for He has (S)prepared a city for them.

The Faith of the Patriarchs(T)

17By faith Abraham, (U)when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18[c]of whom it was said, (V)“In Isaac your seed shall be called,” 19concluding that God (W)was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense.

“In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice” (Genesis 22: 18). This is an affirmation of God's promise to Abram (Abraham) in 12: 2, 3, known as “Abrahamic Covenant.” To offer Isaac was surely the supreme test of Abraham's faith.

What are the three promises God made to Abraham? ›

The angel of the Lord appears to Hagar. The angel speaks as God himself in the first person, and in verse 13 Hagar identifies "the LORD that spoke to her" as "The God Who sees". Genesis 22:11–15. The angel of the Lord appears to Abraham and refers to himself as God in the first person.

What is the moral lesson of Genesis 22:1-19? ›

God wants us to trust Him and let Him accomplish His will for us. We can only do that if we practice yielding to Him every day. The enemy of our souls would like to minimize the importance of obedience to God — especially prompt obedience. However, God loves and rewards one who is determined to follow Him at any cost.
